Looking for some tactical military games.

Main Post:

Hey everyone! I've recently stumbled upon tactical military games and I'm absolutely hooked! After binge-watching some gameplay videos, I've decided to dive into the action myself. However, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the options out there. Can anyone recommend some great tactical military games within the price range of 40-50€? I'm eager to immerse myself in strategic warfare and command my troops to victory. Just a heads up, though – my PC isn't the most powerful, so any game suggestions that aren't too demanding on system requirements would be greatly appreciated (not necessarily tho) ! Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I am mainly looking for games like Escape from Tarkov ,Arma 3 and similar.

Top Comment: Ready or Not. It’s more of a SWAT game but it’s great anyways. You can play the campaign mode where you are the commander of a group of a few other AI officers (the AI is incredible fyi) and have to clear areas. It’s extremely unforgiving and some of your officers will die. Officers can also become mentally unstable due to civilians accidentally getting killed, their teammates getting injured, too many criminals getting killed,... so you’ll have to send them to a psychiatrist as well. You can also download some mods that allow you to speak out your commands instead of having to manually command the AI, f.e. you can say “Red team, on my mark, C2 flash and clear.” , “Blue team, on my mark, open stinger and clear” and then say “Execute” to have both teams do their actions at the same time. Very cool to see and very effective. You get encouraged to use non-lethal weapons like beanbag shotguns, tasers, paintball guns, tear gas, etc.. to subdue criminals instead of outright killing them, but you don’t really get punished that much for just using guns. You can play with other real players but the random players you get tend to be a bit stupid. Another suggestion is SWAT IV. SWAT IV is basically the precursor of Ready or Not. The mechanics are better, but it’s a pretty old game and it kinda looks bad. The voice-commands are built into the game for SWAT IV and it’s also a very unforgiving game. It does miss some of the things that I like from Ready or Not, like the officers’ mental status and a few other things. WWII war games: Enlisted is a good free WWII game where each player leads a small AI squad of snipers, assaulters, tank engineers, rifleman... Hell Let Loose is similar to Enlisted but it does cost money. It is a lot more tactical and the gameplay is much more fun and brutal, though you can’t lead a squad of AI like in Enlisted.

Games where you can build your own army and fight others

Main Post:

Hey guys, so I’m spending my summer exploring all the pc games I’ve missed on as a console player. This mostly means strategy games. It started with civ6, then ck3, then frostpunk, then anno1800, then ixion, and now I’m looking for something to feed my goober strategy addict brain. I’ve been browsing online for something interesting but couldn’t find anything worth it. I heard of mechabellum, people compare it to tft, it kinda hits couple spots, but I dislike the card aspect, i don’t want to spend time reading, I want to watch and see things happening on my screen, explosions and lights and all of that, while still keeping some sort of strategic aspect to it

Top Comment: You're essentially describing every Total War game. They're all basically the same, so pick a setting you like and play that one.

Can anyone recommend me my military FPS games (preferably co-op) to play with my 62 year old non gamer dad?

Main Post:

My dad isn't a gamer, but when I was a kid he loved playing Delta force. I had to put the invincibility cheats on so he wouldn't die, but he had a blast. I recently gifted him my old computer and he's tried to get back into it but is having a really hard time completing any missions (or understanding what to do lol). I bought battlefield 3 because it has co-op mode, but we couldn't get it to work. He has a 2060 so he's not too limited in the games he can play graphics wise.

Are there any military FPS games with a co-op story we can play together online? Preferably with an easy, linear, clear story? Or any games with game modes where we could fight together against AI bots. I'm thinking of getting us sniper elite 5 but wanted to see if anyone had any better suggestions for us before I pulled the trigger

Thanks a lot, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to make some more memories playing games together but don't want to overwhelm him

Top Comment: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands? It might be a bit hard, but at the same time, it looks like a good starter. +Open world

Games that revolves around you having an army

Main Post:

So i want to have a game where i can control an army or some sort. Other than that i also like games where i have party and i prefer hack and slash games and not turn based games. Something like FF7 or FFXV with the party member.

So:

  1. Where i can like control an army or some sort like it, some of the games that came to mind are: shadow of mordor/war where i can recruit an army basically
  2. A game with party members

Number 1 is a must have for me and 2 is optional

TLDR: I basically want a game where at the start i have a few party members and then evolve into an army if possible.

Top Comment: Mount & Blade: Bannerlord or Warband- this is DEFINITELY one you want to check out. Gather an army, make a kingdom, conquer the continent. Conqueror's Blade- a fun MMO that focuses on leading squads of units in PvP battles Bladestorm: Nightmare- older game, but as close to a mindless hack and slash as you will get in this genre. Kenshi- hardcore sandbox survival game. You can do a LOT of interesting things in this game, such as raising an army and razing a nearby town!

Military games with career progression

Main Post:

I fondly remember games like Red Baron and IL-2 Sturmovik where you would start out a low-ranking wingman and eventually, by surviving and succeeding in a dynamic campaign, rise through the ranks. It seems to me that these kinds of games have been few and far between lately - or maybe I've just not been looking in the right places.

In short, what I'm looking for are:

  • Military themed games (not just aviation, could be anything)
  • Career progression (ranks, medals, etc.), might be for just the player character or a party of characters/crew (XCOM being the obvious example for this)
  • Dynamic campaign
  • Any genre - simulation, shooter, strategy, you name it
  • Any release date - if there are other older games besides the titles named above (that can still be bought somewhere, e.g. GOG), I'd love to play them

If anyone has any pointers, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Capture or recruit unique enemies/creatures/soldiers to train and fight for you?

Main Post:

Does anyone know any games where you can capture or recruit unique enemies/creatures/soldiers to train them and have them fight for you? Ideally would include base building and defending as well as offense/attacking.

As an example, I quite liked an aspect of some of the Assassin's Creed games where you could recruit assassins/mercenaries (depending on which game), train them up, and call them out to fight for you. Another example would be Kairosoft's games, such as Beastie Bay, Kingdom Adventurers, and Ninja Village. I can't think of any other games where a system like this is implemented off the top of my head.

Top Comment:

This may be a bit off-kilter for this sub, but if the aspect of recruitment in Assassin's Creed is what appeals to you, I would recommend Middle Earth: Shadow of War for you. The game is probably showing its age at this point, but it has an extremely unique capture and recruit system and the combat is very similar to the AC franchise.

Unfortunately no base building that I know of, sorry.

Edit: Added in the correct name of the game.

Seeking military strategy games with creative base/army building mechanics

Main Post:

Hello everyone,

I've looked and searched for certain type of strategy games. But to no avail. The google store is just a labyrinth of ad farms and so i figured i'd try my luck with making a post.

I'm looking for a strategy game where you build your army up throughout the entire campaign, maybe even build a base, all with somewhat creative game mechanics.

Here is a selection of games that i really enjoyed and that fit the bill:

Bad north: Jotunn - probably my most favourite - build up an army of knights and defend islands from invasion

Kingdom Two Crowns - amazing game where you build up your kingdom and army and fight back enemies.

Dead Ahead: Zombie Warfare - nice game, where you train up and select units for fights but its maybe a little too p2w

Fallout shelter - you build up your base, train your dwellers, send them out to wasteland. The minimum control during wasteland part, is what almost made me not put this one in, but it fits.

1066 - old flash game where you control an army - shamefully not playable on android

I am not looking for Total War, age of Empires or grand strategy type of games, I know them well, but I prefer them on the pc.

I really don't like purely multiplayer games. I am a casual gamer, and I don't have that much spare time to get into those.

Top Comment: Rusted Warfare is a good C&C style game, it's paid but relatively cheap, and the demo has enough content that you'll know whether you like it or not

Are there any simple RTS games where I can just build an army and destroy the enemy?

Main Post:

I have fond memories of old school CC, Dune 2000 and LOTR where I could defend my base while building up an army and finally turn the ties and destroy the enemy. It was simple and it was fun.

SC2 has some of this, but far too many missions have a "Sudden And Extra Time-constrained Suprise Mission", and I don't really care for that.

Are there any somewhat modern RTS games that will scratch that itch? I love building and defending my base with ever increasingly advanced weapons against hoards of monsters, and then go smash them in the end.

And all of this is with a campaign. Not against other players and not just as skirmish missions.

Dorf might work, but it has not been released yet.

Top Comment: There is a free game called "Beyond all reason" that can be played like that if you put the AI on easy or defend only. There are very little constraints. Certainly no time constraints.

Sands of Salazar looks pretty cool. Mix of mount and blade with diablo.

Factual, deep single player military games?

Main Post:

Basically - I've played nearly every Metal Gear Solid game, and although they have some of the most ridiculous plots out there, they also feature hints of deep conversation and exposition about actual strategy, history and the political/human systems of war. I would love to play more games that present the topic of human conflict in a serious & mature manner, without unnecessary cinematic flare. FPS, strategy, genre doesn't really matter. Platform or age doesn't matter either, I'm down for anything. Thanks if you've got any suggestions

Top Comment: It's older, but Hidden and Dangerous was an absolute gem on the PC about 20 years ago. Can be had for relatively cheap on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/703310/Hidden__Dangerous_Action_Pack/ Edit: it is very challenging but also very rewarding. Part of the reward/challenge is figuring out how to navigate the scenarios it throws at you. The enemy AI is unforgiving but fair.
